Case Study | Website

Kids Co.

A new concept for recruiting in childcare. Kids Co. is a  project I took on with a recruiter from the ideating stage all the way through to developing a new job search and recruitment website.

A new platform to recruit in childcare

Kids Co. (name changed) approached me to strategise, design and streamline the process of recruiting qualified candidates in the childcare space. The goal was simple,  we wanted to introduce a new experience that was efficient and fast without comprising the quality of applications for recruiters and to ensure that the platform would be rewarding and worth-while for candidates.

My role

I guided the project end-to-end and led with a clear and driven user-centred design process. I acted as the UX designer and I was the key contact for the client. I managed timelines, workshops and worked closely with our development team and designers to ensure we hit our deadlines.

Discovery

To kick the project off - I started with a 1-week discovery phase. I conducted secondary/desk research, user interviews and brainstorming workshops.

All learnings were compiled and presented back to the client. From our learnings, we were able to conclude with a few clear needs & wants.

Needs

  • To be able to efficiently verify candidates have relevant experience

  • To be able to quickly contact experienced candidates for emergency jobs

  • To only cater and target professionals in the childcare space

Wants

  • Would like to pre-qualify candidates before they apply for jobs

  • The ability to create pools of candidates in the CMS and contact entire pools

  • Smart search that would not show results of jobs that candidates that have already applied to

Sketch

I needed to rapidly validate my idea with developers to ensure it was feasible and within scope before I would begin testing with users.

I sketched out the key screens that would make up a complete user flow on both ends and got the approval from the development team. It was time to test.

Test, learn, iterate

There were some pivotal learnings throughout testing with recruiters and candidates. After the 3 weeks of testing, iterating and refining user flows, we were confident to move forward with a minimum viable product.

Some of our discoveries:

  • That we should also consider a 3rd potential user - parents.

  • Increase the variety of job categories in childcare to expand our reach

  • Included the feature of entering availability of the week ahead for casual candidates

Design

We tested the mobile version of the design with candidate users and the desktop version of design with recruiters to ensure there was a pleasant reaction to the UI.

Note: In order to protect the privacy of my client and honour the NDA, I have created another version of the design. This is not the actual design for Kids co. I have designed these screens just to showcase my design skills.

Success factors of

Kids Co.

Application Flow Management

Recruiters have the ability to view all and categorise job applicants based on the life cycle stage of the application.

As far as testing goes with users, there were some clear success factors of the platform that will hopefully translate to better experiences once it is developed.

Pooling Candidates

A key feature of Kids Co. is the ability to create pools of candidates for casual and or emergency jobs.

Pre-application Quiz for Candidates

Recruiters can set questions for candidates to answer before applying to ensure they are a suitable match.

Smart Search

Candidates can mark jobs that are irrelevant from showing up in their search results.

Multi-User Accounts

Multiple people can work from one account. This was a key feature for recruiters wanting to share pools.

Retrospective

This project was an incredible experience. I learnt so much about forms design and the importance of illuminating the path to completion. I am incredibly proud of my final delivery, but my sense of responsibility does not end once the project is sent to development. I'm excited to launch with my client and to constantly iterate and improve the platform to be more efficient and delightful for recruiters and applicants.
